Are all engine carbon cleaning companies and technologies the same?

BG Products were formed way back in 1972 in Wichita, Kansas, USA and have a significant catalogue of collaborations with OEM's in finding solutions to specific deposit and sludging issues. The Company believes that all cars suffer from carbon deposit issues – because burning fuel releases carbon – always!

Decarbonisation or engine carbon cleaning usually refers to the process of removing carbon deposits. BG Products develop and manufacture their own high quality chemistry and delivery systems to do this, safely and effectively. Other proprietary systems use different classes of chemistry, hydrogen, hot water or warm oil.

BG prefer not to comment on the effectiveness of other cleaning methods and services. BG Products do, however, regularly demonstrate and publish their results, for instance, showing that BG fuel system cleaners contain more of the chemistry recommended by the engine manufacturers themselves to remove the hard baked carbon deposits that interfere with efficient flow of air and fuel, throughout the entire system.

Doesn't normal servicing provide all I need to maintain my vehicle?

Normal servicing does not clean the inside of an engine and that is why many garages like industry expert Frank Massey recommend using BG 44K/BG245 and BG EPR as standard to clean inside an engine every service.

Deposits are a natural ongoing by-product of combustion and without preventative maintenance they will accumulate over time.

BG recommend a dedicated, dual approach – one product for the top half of the engine, to tackle fuel system issues and one for the bottom half, the oil system.

Fuel System: Deposits attach themselves to valves, piston crowns and fuel injectors. When fuel injectors get deposits on their fine spray holes (which they inevitably do) it can interfere with the ability of the injector to atomise the fuel into the engine. A fuel system cleaner will help to stop this happening and keep your engine running optimally.

Oil System: Cylinder compression is vital for a vehicle's Power and Economy. As a vehicle's piston moves it squeezes a fuel/air mixture in the cylinder, giving it explosive power. Rings around each piston ensure a good seal. Loss of compression (and therefore power) is usually due to deposits restricting these rings. A BG Engine Performance Restoration flush will clean deposits from rings, restoring peak compression, ensuring maximum Power and Efficiency.

These two factors - Injector spray pattern + Engine Compression - are Vital to Maintaining and Restoring Power & MPG.

What are carbon deposits and what is engine carbon cleaning?

(Carbon) Deposits are a by-product of combustion. These deposits attach themselves to many parts of the engine, including those critically important to the performance and economy of the engine - Fuel Injectors, Piston Rings and various sensors. What provides the best DPF cleaning?

Modern diesel vehicles by law include sophisticated emissions-control systems. These include a Diesel Particulate filter (DPF) which literally filters the amount of particulates passing into the atmosphere. A level of particulate matter production is to be expected. Soot and ash, after all, are standard by-products of the combustion process. But what exacerbates the problem is poor combustion and oil evaporation which lead to excessive amounts of these deposits.

Under normal conditions, the DPF is designed to use the very high temperatures created in the exhaust while the engine is under load to oxidise and evaporate the trapped particulate matter, thus cleaning (regenerating) itself. However, if this does not take place (perhaps because a high rev. journey did not happen for long enough) the particulate matter will continue to build up to a point that the DPF cannot regenerate itself - And this is also where BG's extensive R&D produced an effective solution.

The BG Diesel Intake and Emissions System Service uses innovative technology to restore the DPF, while simultaneously performing an intensive system clean. The service tool commands its own regeneration by controlling air intake flow and EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) to very precise levels. Once regen temperature is reached, BG's chemistry is used to clean soot right from intake all the way through to the DPF to be burned off and sent out the tailpipe.
